Water stands as a crucial element influencing concrete's creation and quality. Depending on humidity levels or environmental temperatures, concrete reacts differently in varying weather conditions. Concrete additives serve a pivotal role in the production process by managing these factors.

The initial design phase involved conceptualizing a program layout and organizing essential spaces within a gridded structure. This program outlined areas essential for such a center, including workshop spaces, exhibition areas, and simulation rooms demonstrating concrete's behavior under diverse weather conditions.

Choosing the site strategically, I selected a location adjacent to the Rouge River on one side and dry land on the other, aligning with the concept's essence. Positioned at the intersection of Jefferson and Brennan streets, the main entrance to the center resides on the north side of the site.

Materials were meticulously chosen to resonate with the program's needs. For instance, red and blue hues accentuated the simulation rooms, highlighting temperature disparities. Glossy and frosted glass further emphasized contrasts within the project, such as heat versus cold, dryness versus humidity, and transparency versus opacity.

Initial Plan

Site Plan

The final plan comprises three distinct sections, each serving a specific purpose. Public and private areas are distinctly separated, with staff spaces running parallel along the building. The circulation paths for both staff and visitors are indicated on the right side

Upon entering through the main entrance, visitors are welcomed into the Welcome Center, featuring a small lobby, reception area, restrooms, and displays showcasing additives and concrete samples. A small open workshop allows visitors to witness material mixing, while locker rooms and a staff lounge are also provided.

Section

The second section, connected to the first via glass corridors, houses simulator rooms, exhibition spaces for samples and physical models, and a courtyard equipped with machinery and tools for staff use. The third section serves as a temporary exhibition space for artists and researchers to showcase their findings on concrete. Additionally, it provides support for concrete-working artists, featuring a larger open workshop and a closed workshop or classroom for educational events.
A coffee shop within this section offers a relaxing spot for visitors to unwind and serves as a meeting venue for artists and staff.
